Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed his sadness after the Election Commission of India’s draft delimitation proposal for the state of Assam was published. The proposal stipulated the division of Jalukbari constituency, which Sarma has represented since 2001, into three parts. However, Sarma also welcomed the draft paper as it accurately reflected the sentiments of Assam. The proposal does not change the number of assembly or parliamentary constituencies in Assam, which remains at 126 and 14, respectively. Furthermore, the number of assembly seats in the Bodoland Territorial Region has been increased from 16 to 19, and there will be an increase of one assembly seat from the district of West Karbi Anglong. The Election Commission will receive objections and suggestions about the draft delimitation proposal until July 11.
