Chennai: In a gesture to celebrate the festival of Pongal, the Tamil Nadu state government has announced a special gift for ration card holders and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in rehabilitation camps. They will receive 1 kilogram each of raw rice and sugar, along with a sugarcane. The government has allocated a total of ₹238 crore to procure these items and distribute them through ration shops.
Under the government order, the raw rice will be procured at ₹35.2 per kilogram, while the sugar will be purchased at ₹40.6 and the sugarcane at ₹33 per piece. This decision comes as a departure from last year, when the government provided ₹1,000 as a Pongal cash prize. Instead, this year they have chosen to distribute the three essential items ahead of the festival.
This move has been welcomed by the beneficiaries, who see it as a practical and meaningful gesture. Sita Devi, a ration card holder, expressed her gratitude, saying, It is a wonderful initiative by the state government. The gift of rice and sugar will help us celebrate Pongal with traditional fervor, and the sugarcane adds an extra touch of joy.
The decision to distribute raw rice and sugar aligns with the essence of Pongal, a harvest festival that holds immense significance in Tamil Nadu. It is customary to prepare a dish called Pongal, which is made using newly harvested rice and jaggery. By offering these items to the public, the government aims to facilitate their participation in the festival and help them experience the traditional flavors and customs associated with it.
The distribution will take place through ration shops, ensuring efficient and transparent delivery to all eligible individuals. This method also helps in ensuring that the items reach every household in a fair and organized manner.
The government’s decision has garnered praise from various sections of society, with many appreciating the efforts to uphold cultural traditions and contribute to the well-being of the people. This move is expected to make a positive impact on the lives of those receiving the Pongal gift, enabling them to celebrate the festival with joy and gratitude.
With these initiatives, the Tamil Nadu government continues to prioritize the welfare of its citizens and promote inclusivity. The Pongal gift not only provides essential commodities but also represents the government’s commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the state.
As the auspicious festival of Pongal approaches, anticipation and excitement fill the air. The distribution of raw rice, sugar, and sugarcane by the state government adds to the festive fervor, ensuring that families can come together and indulge in the spirit of Pongal. This initiative showcases the government’s efforts to connect with its citizens on a personal level and strengthen the bond between the administration and the people.
As the Pongal celebrations draw nearer, residents across Tamil Nadu eagerly await this thoughtful gift from the government. It serves as a reminder of the significance of the festival and the importance of unity and gratitude. With these tokens of appreciation, the state government hopes to bring smiles to the faces of its people and enhance the joyous atmosphere that surrounds the festival of Pongal.
