In an official statement, Birmingham City stated, Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the Football Club. The decision also led to the departure of first-team coach Carl Robinson.
Rooney, who had previously resigned as coach of Major League Soccer (MLS) club DC United, took over from John Eustace and signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Birmingham City. Reflecting on his tenure, Rooney expressed his gratitude towards the club officials, saying, I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady, and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club.
However, Rooney acknowledged the disappointment of the team’s performance, stating, Football is a results business – and I recognize they have not been at the level I wanted them to be. However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires, and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed. Rooney further added that he plans to spend time with his family as he prepares for his next opportunity as a manager.
While the club searches for a permanent replacement, professional development coach Steve Spooner will assume an interim role. Birmingham City hopes to turn their fortunes around and get back on track as they navigate through a challenging period.
Rooney’s recent managerial experience includes a 17-month stint with Derby County, where he salvaged 55 points to secure survival. However, the team faced relegation to the third tier due to a points deduction amid financial difficulties.
