New Delhi, Jan 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a crucial meeting on Tuesday to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, following a terror attack in Poonch district that claimed the lives of five soldiers two weeks ago. The meeting was attended by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Army staff General Manoj Pande, and other top officials from intelligence and security agencies.

The home minister was briefed about the prevailing security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir, according to an official statement. This meeting comes on the heels of a terror attack on December 21, in which five soldiers were killed by terrorists in an ambush in Poonch district. Additionally, three civilians, aged between 27 and 42, were found dead shortly after they were allegedly taken into custody by the Army for questioning, which triggered widespread outrage.

In response to these incidents, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army chief General Manoj Pande had paid a visit to Poonch to assess the situation. The Jammu and Kashmir administration had also announced compensation and jobs for the families of the deceased civilians, and legal action has been initiated in the matter.

The security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has been marked by sporadic violence since the start of this year. Last year, districts like Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi witnessed a series of encounters that claimed the lives of 54 individuals, including 28 terrorists and 19 security personnel, as per officials. The recent escalation in violence has been attributed to desperate attempts from across the border to revive terrorism in the region.

The majority of the terrorists were killed while trying to infiltrate across the border into Indian territory, added officials. One significant incident last year took place in Chamrer forest, where five Army personnel lost their lives and a major-rank officer sustained injuries during an anti-terrorist operation. A foreign terrorist was also neutralized during the operation.

As the situation remains highly volatile in the region, authorities continue to prioritize the safety and security of the people. The Union Home Minister’s review of the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir signals the central government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
