Five Women Football Players Set to Attend Sports Camp at Princeton University

Princeton University’s sports camp is set to host five female footballers from Belize as part of the country’s first U.S. Visitor Sports Program. These young athletes will undergo physical and skills training, as well as leadership training during their two-week visit to the prestigious university. The initiative was launched today in a ceremony in Belmopan, attended by the U.S. Embassy and the Football Federation of Belize. The program was established to promote leadership and gender equality. The five players selected for the program will be representing Belize’s under-eighteen national team. The President of the Football Federation of Belize, Sergio Chuc, emphasized the importance of developing leadership skills through sports, expressing hope that the young women will use what they learn to become future leaders in Belize. Former Olympian and U.S. Ambassador to Belize Michelle Kwan praised the program for promoting sports diplomacy and empowering women, noting that upon their return, the athletes will contribute to the advancement of football in Belize. One of the players selected, Shameka Lambey, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and is looking forward to developing her football skills, socialization skills and, most importantly, leadership skills. Rodwell Ferguson, the Minister of Sports, was also present at the launch and expressed hope that the exchange program will pave the way for more young Belizean athletes to travel overseas and succeed in sports.
