The internet has made a huge impact on our daily lives, but as with most things, it comes with its own set of problems. Dr. V K Paul, a member of Health, NITI Aayog, highlighted the positive effects of the internet at a G20 co-branded event organized by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. However, he also emphasized the negative effects of excessive use of the web, including the dangers posed by artificial intelligence. Dr. Paul called on parents, schools, and the media to encourage healthy habits and develop rules to ensure that adolescents are not harmed by the internet.
Dr. Paul also stressed the importance of a collective response to address the challenges posed by technology. The new school health program is designed to respond to these challenges and ensure students’ well-being. The town hall session brought together senior officials from the Health Ministry, alongside partner agencies such as Gates Foundation, UNFPA, USAID, WHO, UNICEF, and youth icons from G-20 nations to discuss issues such as mental health, menstrual hygiene, and cyberbullying.
Dr. Paul called on young people to share their ideas and help design the new school health program. He reiterated that the Ministry of Health and Niti Aayog are working together to review, refine, and upgrade adolescent care. The youth representatives also discussed issues related to sexual and reproductive health, mental health, healthy eating, and the importance of sleep.
Overall, the event highlighted the need to create an environment where young people can thrive, and healthy habits are prioritized. The new school health program and collective response, along with the involvement of key partner agencies, will ensure that future generations are ready to embrace technology while maintaining a healthy balance.
