Asamoah Gyan, a former cult hero of the Premier League, announced his retirement from football, despite not playing for two years. Gyan, 37, played for Sunderland between 2010 and 2012, and was a fan favourite, scoring ten times in 34 Premier League appearances before moving to United Arab Emirates side Al Ain FC. He retired at a press conference and stated that he will put his knowledge and experience to use in coaching, football business, and scouting. Gyan famously missed a penalty in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal against Uruguay after Luis Suarez’s infamous handball. He featured 109 times for Ghana and scored 51 international goals. Although Gyan had teased a potential comeback for the national side at the 2022 World Cup, it did not come to fruition.
