Five-Day Workshop on the Evolution of Technical Terminology in Punjabi Language Held

Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar recently organized a five-day workshop to develop technical terminology in Punjabi. The effort is part of an ongoing initiative to promote the use of Punjabi in the field of technical and engineering education. The workshop, held in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, Ministry of Education, Government of India, was attended by experts from the Department of Electronics Technology, Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering of this university as well as experts from other institutes.

The workshop was organized to review the technical terminology already developed in previous workshops. A total of 12 subject experts participated in the process of reviewing Punjabi engineering terminology. Dr. Ashok Selwatkar, Assistant Director, and Dr. Shailendra Singh from Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, New Delhi, also attended this workshop. Dr. Ashok Selwatkar expressed his happiness on the contribution of Guru Nanak Dev University in the successful completion of this task of development of more than fifty thousand technical terms in Punjabi language.

Dr. Shailendra Singh said that this technical terminology in Punjabi language will be published by the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, New Delhi, in the form of a dictionary very soon, and it will also be available online.

During the valedictory session, the Department of Electronics Technology thanked all the experts from Guru Nanak Dev University and educational institutions for sharing their knowledge and expertise for successfully conducting this workshop. Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Sarbjot Singh Behl, and Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Karanjeet Singh Kahlon appreciated the efforts made by the Department of Electronics Technology in the development of technical terminology in Punjabi language and congratulated the organizing team as well as experts for successfully organizing this workshop.

The workshop was organized to fulfil the aim of the National Education Policy-2020 to promote technical and professional education in regional languages. The department of Electronics Technology has successfully organized five workshops in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology to develop technical terminology related to engineering subjects in Punjabi language earlier. This workshop is an extension of the same initiative and is a step towards promoting the use of regional languages in technical education.
