China Urges International Community to Act on Gaza Ceasefire Crisis

A Chinese envoy has called on the international community to promote a ceasefire in Gaza amidst the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where over 2 million innocent people are suffering. Despite previous resolutions by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council urging a ceasefire and an end to the collective punishment of Gaza’s people, the conflict persists. Geng emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further casualties, facilitate humanitarian assistance, and enhance prospects for a political settlement. China urged Israel to cease indiscriminate military attacks and collective punishment, while also urging the international community to effectively implement measures to boost humanitarian aid in Gaza. Geng emphasized the failure to implement the two-state solution and guarantee the rights of Palestinians as the crux of the prolonged conflict. China called for a broad-based and effective international peace conference to expedite the two-state solution and supported Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations, as well as the resumption of direct negotiations between Palestine and Israel. The situation in Gaza is at a critical stage, with essential supplies depleted, the medical system paralyzed, social order on the verge of collapse, and vulnerable populations facing extreme hardship. The international community must respond urgently to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians in Gaza and work towards a lasting peace in the region.
