A Bengaluru-based firm is providing funding for BharatGPT, India’s own AI platform designed to support 11 Indian languages with plans to expand to 22 languages. The project is being developed by a consortium led by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, in collaboration with academics and experts from multiple IITs. Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare (SML), the funding firm, has already invested $2.5 million in the initiative. They have also imported 256 GPUs, essential for building BharatGPT, at a cost of $16 million. SML is in talks with a global chip maker to potentially secure another 1,000 GPUs at an additional cost of $120 million. The aim of BharatGPT is to make AI accessible to India’s diverse communities and bridge the digital divide, with the potential to transform India’s digital landscape and unlock opportunities for the entire population. The project is attracting industry interest, including collaboration with Reliance Jio and partnership with Nasscom.
