The Charleston Housing Authority is making strides in their plan to redevelop and renovate all of their public housing units, with the latest focus being on the Cooper River Courts Community. The goal is to replace the outdated 1940s-era units with over 1,100 mixed-use housing units, consisting of market-rate, workforce, and affordable housing. The Charleston Housing Authority has awarded a $400 million contract to Atlanta-based developer Integral for the Cooper River Courts project, which is set to commence construction in 2025. The project will be carried out in three phases to minimize the need for residents to relocate at once. In addition to Cooper River Courts, the Housing Authority plans to secure funding for the redevelopment of Meeting Street Manor and the renovation of Robert Mills Manor. Ultimately, the goal is to double the number of public housing units on the peninsula within the next decade. Recognizing the importance of affordable housing, the Charleston Housing Authority’s Chair of the Board of Commissioners, Herb Partlow, expressed his conversation with Mayor-elect Cogswell, who is committed to addressing the affordable housing crisis. With these initiatives underway, the lives of residents are expected to be positively transformed.
