A Richmond woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison after her infant daughter sustained severe injuries. Casey Renee Miller, 29, pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony. The neglect charge was reduced from a Level 1 felony as part of a plea agreement, with four other neglect charges being dismissed. Miller’s daughter, who was four months old at the time, suffered brain bleeds, broken bones, and vertebral injuries consistent with abuse and severe shaking. The child continues to have impaired eyesight and neurological damage. The baby’s father, Matthew James Shaffer, also faced multiple neglect charges and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Miller will serve eight years in prison followed by two years on probation. The judge credited her with 178 days already spent in jail.
