The immediate-past Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, has strongly denied any knowledge or association with a contractor named James Okwete, who was recently arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly laundering N37.1 billion. Umar-Farouq made it clear that the allegations of her involvement are baseless and malicious attacks on her reputation.
Responding to the claims, Umar-Farouq took to her social media platforms to address the issue directly, stating, There have been a number of reports linking me to a purported investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission into the activities of one James Okwete, someone completely unknown to me. James Okwete neither worked for nor represented me in any way whatsoever. The linkages and associations to my person are spurious.
The former minister remained resolute as she vowed to take legal action against those responsible for tarnishing her image. She shared her intentions, saying, While I resist the urge to engage in any media trial whatsoever, I have however contacted my legal team to explore possible options to seek redress on the malicious attack on my person.
Sadiya Umar-Farouq is widely known as the pioneer Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, having been appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2019. Her appointment was significant as she became the youngest cabinet member at the time.
The allegations against Umar-Farouq emerged from an ongoing EFCC investigation. According to a national newspaper, N37.1 billion was illicitly transferred from the Federal Government’s coffers and funnelled into 38 different bank accounts linked to or connected with James Okwete, the arrested contractor.
It is essential to note that these allegations are unsubstantiated and have been vehemently refuted by Umar-Farouq. As the investigations continue, her denial of any involvement raises questions about the credibility and accuracy of the claims.
The former minister’s swift response to the allegations, using her social media platforms, highlights her determination to uphold her reputation and address the matter directly. It remains to be seen how the investigation will unfold and whether any evidence will emerge connecting Umar-Farouq to the arrested contractor.
As the public eagerly awaits further developments, it is crucial to ensure a fair and thorough investigation is conducted. The allegations made against a former cabinet member are concerning, given the role and responsibility she held in the government. However, until concrete evidence is presented, Umar-Farouq maintains her innocence and vows to clear her name through legal channels.
