Hyderabad (Telangana), December 25 (ANI): AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has called for the Congress government in Karnataka to lift the ban on hijab, demanding an order to allow people to wear whatever they want without restrictions.

Asaduddin Owaisi stated, The Congress has been in power in Karnataka for the past seven months. They simply have to release an order allowing people to wear whatever they want, stating that there will be no dress code. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah is scared of releasing one order. We demand an order from the Congress Govt of Karnataka lifting the ban on hijab…

The hijab issue has caused tension between different political parties, with Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha criticizing the Congress for not fulfilling their promises. Kavitha said, Congress forgets all promises as soon as it wins elections. They promised to provide six guarantees in Karnataka, but nothing has been done as of now. They promised to lift the hijab ban in educational institutions in Karnataka, but now seem confused about it. They do not implement what they promise. It is in their DNA.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah initially announced on Friday that the ban imposed by the BJP would be withdrawn, emphasizing that people’s clothing preferences should not be politicized. He further mentioned that the decision is under consideration and will be discussed by the government.

The announcement received support from several ministers in the Karnataka cabinet. Priyank Kharge stated, Whatever the Karnataka government is doing is as per the law and framework of the Constitution. Any policy detrimental to the development of Karnataka will be reviewed and removed if necessary. Law Minister HK Patil also supported the decision, stating, The decision will be announced soon, but the line of thinking of the CM is in line with the government and the party. The last government’s decision about the hijab was biased and not in tune with the secular thinking of the country. This has nothing to do with elections.

However, the decision faced opposition from BJP leaders, including former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who accused Siddaramaiah of diverting attention from important issues. Bommai said, If you look at the pattern that Siddaramaiah is following…there has been no development at all. He has better business to do than rake up this old issue, which has been in the Supreme Court.

The hijab ban controversy in Karnataka started in January 2022 when Government PU College in Udupi allegedly barred six girls wearing hijab from entering. The incident led to protests by the girls outside the college, highlighting the need for a resolution regarding dress codes in educational institutions.

The Congress government’s decision to lift the ban on hijab is expected to address the concerns of those who believe in the freedom to practice their religious beliefs without restrictions. The debate surrounding the hijab ban emphasizes the importance of respecting individuals’ choices and ensuring inclusivity in educational institutions.
