Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji is set to undergo bypass surgery for his heart-related ailment at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai, according to State Health Minister Ma Subramanian. Balaji, who is the Minister for Electricity and Prohibition and Excise, was arrested on June 14 and admitted to a government hospital in Chennai after experiencing chest pain. The Madras High Court allowed him on June 15 to be shifted to a private hospital of his choice. Doctors at Kauvery Hospital have recommended bypass surgery. The Enforcement Directorate has moved to the Supreme Court against the High Court’s ruling, claiming that Balaji is an influential minister. A vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and MM Sundresh will hear the case on June 21.
