Panaji: In an effort to enhance road safety measures and streamline traffic management, the Goa government has implemented a comprehensive signboard policy. This policy establishes strict guidelines for the design, placement, and maintenance of road signboards and markings across the state’s road networks.

Aligned with the standards set by the Indian Road Congress, the policy aims to ensure standardized and effective signage that promotes clear communication to road users, ultimately contributing to safer roadways.

The main objective of this initiative is to establish a uniform and efficient system of road signboards and markings, not only to promote road safety but also to facilitate seamless traffic flow. The policy covers all categories of roads under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD), including national highways, state highways, district roads, urban, semi-urban, and village roads. It sets a precedent for comprehensive road safety measures across diverse terrains and traffic densities.

Key highlights of the policy include guidelines for signboard design and placement, ensuring visibility and providing timely information. The policy also emphasizes compliance with road marking standards, as well as the implementation of strict measures, public awareness initiatives, and periodic evaluations.

By adhering to recognized standards, the policy aims to create a safer and organized road network, enhancing road safety and providing a seamless experience for all road users in Goa.

Following the implementation of the signboard policy, the Public Works Department and other stakeholders will conduct regular evaluations to ensure the effectiveness of signage and markings. These evaluations will allow for adjustments based on evolving road conditions and traffic patterns.

This groundbreaking system ensures the installation of standardized and clear road signage, fostering road safety and efficient traffic management throughout the state of Goa.

The introduction of the comprehensive signboard policy has been welcomed by experts in the transportation and road safety sectors. Road safety advocate, Mr. Kumar Srinivasan, expressed his support for the initiative, stating, Standardization of road signage is a crucial step towards improving road safety. The guidelines outlined in this policy will greatly aid in reducing accidents and facilitating smoother traffic movement.

Goa residents have also expressed their approval of the policy, citing the need for better road safety measures in the state. Ms. Anaya Desai, a local resident, shared her thoughts, saying, We often encounter confusing or poorly placed signboards on the roads, leading to confusion and traffic jams. This policy will undoubtedly contribute to safer and more organized roadways in Goa.

The signboard policy is a significant step forward in the Goa government’s efforts to prioritize road safety and streamline traffic management. By implementing standardized and clear road signage, the policy aims to create a safer and more efficient road network that benefits all road users.

As the policy is implemented and evaluated, it is expected to bring about positive changes that will enhance road safety and improve the overall traffic experience in the state of Goa.
