Alec Baldwin, PETA send letter demanding Radio City Music Hall stop using live animals in Christmas show
Alec Baldwin has raised concerns about the use of live animals in the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. In a letter written on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Baldwin urged the CEO of Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corporation, James Dolan, to put an end to the practice starting from 2023.
Baldwin, known for his role in 30 Rock, expressed his belief that the show could do without donkeys, camels, and sheep in its Nativity scene. He argued that the Christmas Spectacular already featured incredibly talented human performers and emphasized that removing live animals from the production would align it with the modern era and the true spirit of Christmas.
The actor pointed out that other productions, such as Broadway’s The Lion King, have successfully managed to incorporate animals without live ones actually taking the stage. Baldwin highlighted that animals used in live shows often endure stress from being transported in cramped trucks, confined to back rooms, exposed to loud sounds, and disorienting lights.
Furthermore, Baldwin drew attention to allegations against the Dawn Animal Agency—a long-time collaborator with the Christmas Spectacular—for neglecting to provide animals with necessities like clean enclosures, adequate space, and veterinary care. He argued that no production should be associated with such cruelty.
In response, a spokesperson for MSG denied the claim that animals are sourced from the Dawn Animal Agency. They affirmed that the well-being and safety of the animals in the Living Nativity scene were paramount and assured that exceptional care was provided to them throughout the limited run of the show.
The controversy surrounding the use of live animals in theatrical productions has long been a subject of debate. Advocates for animal rights argue that such practices are outdated and inhumane, while supporters of tradition maintain that live animals add authenticity and charm to performances.
As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen whether Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular will make changes to its longstanding inclusion of live animals. The letter from Alec Baldwin and PETA adds to the growing chorus calling for an end to this age-old practice.
