India’s federal sports ministry has suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) following the resignation of Olympian wrestler Sakshi Malik in protest. Malik, a bronze medalist at the 2016 Olympics, announced her immediate retirement after the appointment of Sanjay Singh, a close aide of his predecessor who was accused of sexual harassment. The sports ministry accused the newly elected WFI committee of disregarding legal and procedural norms. The federation has been suspended but not terminated, and the ministry cited concerns over the premises from which the federation operates. Brij Bhushan Singh, the previous president and an accused sexual harasser, distanced himself from the sport, while Sanjay Singh claimed to be uninformed about the ministry’s decision. Malik expressed uncertainty over the suspension’s extent and reiterated her fight for justice for women wrestlers. Earlier this year, the protests against Brij Bhushan Singh had led to the suspension of the WFI by the game’s governing body, United World Wrestling. The federation’s failure to appoint a new president resulted in Indian wrestlers competing as neutral athletes in international events.
