On the eve of the US invasion of Iraq, Maines publicly expressed her shame regarding then-President George W. Bush, who happened to hail from Texas like the band members. Maines declared the band’s opposition to the impending war and the violence it entailed. The comment quickly went viral and resulted in the blacklisting of the Dixie Chicks by the music industry.
