Malayalam film ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ and drama film ’12th Fail’ have been left out of contention for the 96th Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the shortlists for several categories, including best original song and international feature. However, both films failed to secure a spot in the final shortlists.

The flood-themed film ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ depicts the resilience of individuals from different walks of life who are faced with the challenges and aftermath of the devastating Kerala floods. Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the movie became a phenomenon in the Malayalam film industry, earning the title of the highest-grossing Malayalam film in 2018 and ranking among the top three highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time.

Meanwhile, ’12th Fail’, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, delves into the struggles of UPSC aspirants, drawing inspiration from the real-life experiences of millions of students who attempt the challenging entrance examination.

The 96th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 10, 2024, in Los Angeles. The nominations voting period will run from January 11 to 16, 2024, with the official nominations announcement set for January 23. Following the nominations, there will be a four-week period for final voting, starting on February 22. The event will be broadcast live on ABC and in over 200 territories worldwide from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

While these two films may have missed out on the Oscars race, their impact and stories have resonated with audiences, highlighting their relevance and contribution to the world of cinema. Despite not making it to the final shortlists, both ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ and ’12th Fail’ have left their mark on the industry and showcased the talent and creativity of the filmmakers, actors, and crew involved.

Although the films may not be competing for an Oscar, their recognition and success within the Malayalam film industry remain significant achievements. The stories they tell and the emotions they evoke have captivated audiences and contributed to the cultural landscape of cinema.

As the countdown to the 96th Oscars begins, the film industry eagerly awaits the announcement of the final nominations, anticipating which films will emerge as frontrunners in the race for the prestigious Academy Awards.
