The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the Southwest monsoon has further advanced, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of South India. Tamil Nadu has seen moderate rainfall in isolated areas, leading to waterlogging in some low-lying areas. Schools in Tirupathur district were closed due to the weather conditions. Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu have experienced rainfall, leading to flooded roads and school closures.
The IMD has issued a warning for the next few hours for certain states, stating that rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to continue. The Southwest monsoon began on June 8, one week later than usual. IMD had predicted the monsoon would arrive on June 4. The monsoon is critical for kharif crops that depend on rainfall.
A recent IMD bulletin has warned that heat wave/severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue in some/isolated pockets over the next few days in East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. The heat wave is considered if the maximum temperature of a station reaches 40 degrees Celsius or more for plains and at least 30 degrees Celsius or more for hilly regions.
The Southwest monsoon is resuming its trajectory post-Cyclone Biparjoy, which has been the longest storm in the Arabian Sea. The delay in monsoon has resulted in a rainfall deficit for some southern states, and more rainfall is expected as the Southwest monsoon continues to make its way across the states.
The IMD has cautioned people to pay attention to the weather bulletins and take necessary precautions.
