REDUCING HOMELESSNESS: City of Redding approves plan for homeless day resource center

Redding’s city council and Shasta County Supervisors have given their unanimous endorsement to ‘AT HOME,’ a comprehensive plan aimed at addressing homelessness. Developed by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC), the plan focuses on enhancing accountability and communication among local governments. A key component of the plan is the establishment of a day resource center, which will serve as a centralized hub for major homeless service organizations in the community.

Funding for the day resource center will come from an $8.3-million encampment grant that the city applied for earlier this year. Redding Mayor Tenessa Audette highlighted the cost savings associated with the project, stating, We got it at a discount. The building was purchased for $800,000, and it is being renovated for $1.2 million. Additionally, we have allocated a operational budget of $1 million for three years, ensuring that the navigation day resource center will be fully funded for $3 million.

Mayor Audette acknowledged the critical importance of addressing homelessness in the community, stating that it is the top concern among residents and has a direct impact on local businesses. She emphasized the center’s role in supporting both the homeless population and those working tirelessly to help them. Audette also revealed that the city still needs to determine how to allocate the remaining budget of over $5 million. Additional hotel space, emergency shelters, and an outreach director are among the potential measures being considered.

The establishment of the day resource center marks a significant step forward in Redding’s efforts to combat homelessness. By consolidating major service organizations under one roof, the center will streamline the provision of aid and support for the unhoused community. This centralized approach is expected to enhance coordination and efficiency, ensuring that resources are maximized to address the complex issue of homelessness effectively.

The ‘AT HOME’ plan, supported by the city council and county supervisors, places a strong emphasis on collaboration and partnership among various stakeholders. It seeks to foster a more holistic and comprehensive approach to homelessness, recognizing that no single entity can address the issue in isolation. The day resource center serves as a physical manifestation of this collaborative spirit, providing a space where service providers can work together to support those in need.

As the city moves forward with this ambitious plan, it aims to further explore innovative solutions to address homelessness. Redding’s commitment to tackling the issue head-on demonstrates its dedication to creating a community where everyone has access to safe and stable housing. By prioritizing accountability, effective communication, and the consolidation of resources, Redding is charting a path toward meaningful and sustainable change.

The approval of the plan represents a significant milestone in the City of Redding’s efforts to combat homelessness and improve the lives of its most vulnerable residents. With the day resource center set to become a central hub for unhoused individuals seeking assistance, the city is taking a bold step towards providing comprehensive support services. By leveraging the allocated funding wisely and collaborating closely with service organizations, Redding is poised to make a meaningful impact in the fight against homelessness.
