According to provisional payroll data, India’s Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESIC) added 17.9 lakh new employees in April 2023. This data is provisional as report generation is a continuous process. The ESIC provides sickness, maternity, disability and employment injury-related medical care to insured people and their families. To enhance coverage, 30,249 new establishments were also registered in the same month. The Ministry of Labour and Employment’s release stated that the data indicates that 8.37 lakh of the new registrations were individuals up to the age of 25 years, comprising around 47% of the total number of employees. Gender-wise, the enrolment of female members in April was 3.53 lakh and 63 transgender employees were also registered under the scheme. “It shows that ESIC is committed to delivering its benefits to every section of the society,” the ministry added.
