The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed opposition to the appointment of Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, responding to comments made by the Public Security Minister. BASL President Kaushalya Navaratne highlighted the importance of appointing individuals to the role who have not violated fundamental rights or faced criminal allegations. The statement comes after the Supreme Court directed Tennakoon and three other officers to pay compensation to a person who was tortured by the police in 2011. The BASL emphasized the necessity for the police to adhere to the rule of law and restore public confidence in the force. They called for a transparent appointment process for the IGP and other positions within the police to establish public trust.
