Vatican’s Approval of Blessings for Same-Sex Couples Sparks Mixed Reactions

The recent decision by the Vatican to allow priests to bless same-sex couples without validating their marriage has elicited varied responses from rights advocates. While some see it as a positive step forward, others consider it insufficient.

In a groundbreaking move, the Vatican approved a document stating that Roman Catholic priests can bless same-sex couples without engaging in any ritualization that might imply a marriage. However, it is essential to note that the church has not altered its doctrine on marriage, clarifying that a blessing does not signify approval of the union.

The document from the Vatican’s doctrine office emphasized that such blessings should not occur alongside civil union ceremonies or in connection with them. It expressly stated that no clothing, gestures, or words appropriate for a wedding should be used during these blessings.

Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernandez, who heads the church’s office on doctrine, emphasized that this declaration does not seek to change the traditional doctrine of the church about marriage and aims to avoid confusion arising from liturgical rites or blessings similar to those of a wedding that may lead to misunderstandings.

This document overturns a 2021 Vatican ruling that prohibited Catholic churches from blessing gay couples, citing that God cannot bless sin. Pope Francis, on the other hand, views the blessing as an act of inclusion, solidarity, and peacemaking.

The Pope sees the blessing as a positive message conveying comfort, care, and encouragement. He believes that the blessing represents God’s merciful embrace and the motherhood of the church, encouraging the faithful to extend the same kindness to their fellow believers.

The document points to Pope Francis’ prayer in December 2020, which provided the foundation for this new practice. The Pope emphasized the importance of blessings and highlighted the joy that comes from blessing God and learning from Him.

In response to the Vatican’s decision, the Homosexual Integration and Liberation Movement, a rights advocacy group in Chile, described it as too late, too little and damaging to the dignity of believers. They deemed it a new form of exclusion disguised as anti-discrimination.

Conversely, the Ecuadorian federation of LGBT+ organizations celebrated the declaration, recognizing that not accepting marriage equality perpetuates discrimination. They view the decision as a positive but insufficient step, emphasizing that marriage is a fundamental right that should be recognized for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

While the Vatican’s decision has elicited mixed reactions, it is undeniably an essential step towards the full acceptance of LGBT+ individuals by the Catholic Church. As the church continues to navigate the delicate balance between tradition and inclusivity, the impacts of this decision on the LGBTQ+ community will undoubtedly be closely watched.
