The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed the Bombay High Court that it may take up to a year to install protective grilles on all of the city’s 74,682 manholes. The court has requested that the BMC considers temporary safety measures during the upcoming monsoon season to protect people from falling into open manholes. Last week, the HC asked if the BMC could install protective grilles on all of the manholes in preparation for the rains, with the court suggesting the use of temporary measures to prevent accidents. Senior advocate Anil Sakhare for the civic body reportedly told the bench that the process of issuing tenders, finalizing contractors and issuing work orders is necessary but could take some time before installation could begin. The BMC assured the HC that it would consider temporary safety mechanisms during the review meeting to be held on Thursday and the outcome would be conveyed to the court on Monday. In addition, the bench has requested that the BMC ensure orders for providing medical assistance to people who fall into manholes are compiled.
