Estranged AIADMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, O. Panneerselvam, has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to ensure that Tamil Nadu is allocated its fair share of Cauvery river water. Panneerselvam called on Stalin to pressure the Karnataka government to release the appropriate amount of water, as directed by the final orders of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court.
Currently, Karnataka is only releasing a fraction of the prescribed quantity of water, which should be around 177.25 TMC annually. At a recent meeting convened by the Cauvery Tribunal in Delhi, Karnataka officials only committed to releasing the balance of water after the onset of the Southeast monsoon.
Panneerselvam argued that Karnataka would only release surplus water after the monsoon and called on Stalin to talk to Siddaramaiah, the current Congress government’s leader in Karnataka. The former Chief Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring Tamil Nadu receives its fair share of Cauvery river water.
It is worth noting that Tamil Nadu is highly dependent on the Cauvery river for agricultural and industrial purposes. Therefore, the allocation of water is critical to the state’s economic growth. Panneerselvam’s appeal to Stalin highlights the issue’s sensitivity and importance.
In conclusion, Panneerselvam’s call comes at a crucial time, and it is vital that pressure is applied to the Karnataka government, ensuring that Tamil Nadu receives its fair share of Cauvery river water.
