New Delhi: The Indian government has directed rice millers’ outfits to decrease the retail price of non-basmati rice following a surge in prices despite a good crop and high availability. The Centre has cautioned that any attempts at profiteering will be strictly dealt with. The move comes in response to the significant gap between the maximum retail price (MRP) and the actual retail price of non-basmati rice, prompting the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs to urge the industry to lower prices for the benefit of consumers.

In a meeting with representatives from leading rice processing industry associations, Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra reviewed the domestic pricing scenario of non-basmati rice. The ministry stressed the importance of bringing prices down to a realistic level to safeguard consumers’ interests.

The rising prices of non-basmati rice are a cause for concern, especially considering the good crop and high availability. It is our duty to ensure that rice is available to consumers at affordable prices, stated a ministry release.

The government’s directive has been met with mixed reactions from the industry. While some millers’ associations have agreed to cooperate and reduce the retail price, others have expressed concerns over potential losses. However, the ministry’s warning against profiteering has encouraged industry representatives to reassess their pricing strategies.

We understand the government’s concern for consumers, and we are committed to meeting their needs by offering rice at reasonable prices. We will work towards reducing the gap between the MRP and the actual retail price, stated a spokesperson from a prominent rice millers’ association.

The decision to lower rice prices is expected to benefit millions of consumers across the country. Non-basmati rice, a staple food for a significant portion of the Indian population, has seen a surge in prices recently, causing financial strain on households.

Consumers have welcomed the government’s intervention, expressing relief at the prospect of reduced prices. Many believe that affordable rice will ease the burden on their monthly budgets.

After the recent price rise, it has been difficult for us to afford rice, which is a staple in our meals. We hope this directive will make rice prices more affordable so that we can meet our dietary needs without worrying about the cost, said a New Delhi resident.

In addition to addressing the concerns of consumers, the government’s move is also aimed at ensuring fair practices within the rice industry. By emphasizing the need to lower prices, the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs aims to prevent any undue advantage taken by market players.

As the industry associations now face the challenge of reducing the retail price of non-basmati rice, the government will closely monitor the implementation and adherence to the directive. Any violation or failure to comply with the pricing regulations may result in strict action being taken against the defaulting parties.

For now, the government’s intervention offers hope to consumers that non-basmati rice will become more affordable, allowing them to meet their dietary needs without straining their wallets. As the industry works towards bringing prices down, it remains to be seen how effectively this directive will translate into tangible benefits for consumers across the country.
