Doctors in Taiwan have successfully removed more than 300 kidney stones from a woman who relied on bubble tea and other sweetened drinks instead of water for hydration. The 20-year-old, known as Xiao Yu, was admitted to Chi Mei Hospital in Tainan after experiencing severe lower back pain and fever. Scans revealed her right kidney was swollen with fluid and filled with hundreds of kidney stones ranging from 5mm to 2cm in size. It was determined that chronic dehydration caused by her inadequate water intake and the build-up of minerals in her kidneys led to the condition. Surgeons performed a 2-hour-long surgery called percutaneous nephrolithotomy to extract the stones, after which the patient’s condition stabilized, and she was discharged after a few days. Doctors stressed the importance of proper water intake to dilute minerals in urine, preventing the formation of kidney stones. In Taiwan, men are three times more likely to develop kidney stones than women.
