Tech experts are criticizing EasyPark for downplaying a major cyber attack that resulted in the theft of user data. The incident, which occurred on December 10, 2023, compromised personal information and partial payment details of users of the EasyPark app, which has around 3 million installations on Dutch smartphones. EasyPark, formerly known as Parkmobile, confirmed that the breach was the result of a recent cyber attack and has taken steps to address the situation.

According to reports, the stolen data includes users’ contact information such as name, telephone number, physical address, email address, and partial IBAN or credit card numbers. EasyPark has engaged external security experts to assist in dealing with the breach and has also reported the incident to a national supervisory authority, likely the Dutch Data Protection Authority.

Following the attack, EasyPark customers have experienced various error messages within the app. While the company has promised to personally inform affected customers via email, there is uncertainty regarding the scale of the breach, as not all customers have received notifications. EasyPark expressed regret over the incident and emphasized their efforts to restore customer confidence.

However, tech experts have voiced concerns about EasyPark’s response to the data breach. They argue that the company is downplaying the severity of the situation, particularly in terms of the leaked data, which includes partial payment information. Critics highlight the discrepancy between EasyPark’s characterization of the data as non-sensitive and the actual content of the stolen information.

As EasyPark faces mounting scrutiny, the company must navigate the aftermath of the cyber attack while striving to regain the trust of its customers. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing threats posed by cybercriminals and underscores the need for robust security measures in the digital landscape.

In the coming days, EasyPark is expected to provide further updates on the situation and offer clarity to affected users. As investigations continue, it is crucial for individuals impacted by the breach to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their personal information.
