The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the irregularities worth Rs 12,024-crore ($1.6 billion) of spending by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) between November 2019 and 2022. The Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) found alleged misappropriation in the civic body’s expenses related to various projects during this period. The SIT will investigate the financial irregularities and embezzlement of public funds unearthed by the CAG. The team will include officers of the Economic Offences Wing, senior officers of the city police and will be led by Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar. The approval for the formation of the SIT came after various quarters demanded that the chief minister investigate the alleged frauds and book those responsible. The CAG team had previously visited the BMC to probe various projects, tenders, purchases and expenses incurred during the Covid-19 pandemic period, submitting its special report in March 2023.
