Stop online abuse of sportswomen | The Citizen

According to a study released this week by Fifa and the Fifpro global players’ body, the recent tournament held in Australia and New Zealand saw at least 152 players receiving targeted discriminatory, abusive or threatening messaging. Shockingly, almost half of the verified online abuse was found to be homophobic, sexual or sexist in nature, highlighting the deeply troubling issue faced by sportswomen.

The report revealed that it was the US women’s team, although knocked out in the last-16 stage, who experienced the highest levels of abuse. This toxic online behavior has severe consequences on the mental health of the players. Colombian player Leicy Santos emphasized the impact, stating, If there is one thing that footballers suffer from the most, apart from losing, it is all the abusive comments – the taunts, the insults. It is a very sensitive issue when it comes to mental health.

Acknowledging the gravity of the issue, Fifa and Fifpro took a step in the right direction by analyzing 5.1 million posts and comments, providing valuable insights into the scale of the problem. However, more proactive measures are needed to combat this scourge effectively.

Addressing online abuse requires comprehensive action that goes beyond mere symbolic gestures. It is crucial to set examples and hold culprits accountable if we are to put an end to this epidemic of hate. This can serve as a deterrent and establish a safer online environment for sportswomen to thrive.

The focus should now be on devising strategies that combine both preventive and punitive measures. Raising awareness about the issue among fans, implementing stricter social media regulations, and collaborating with tech companies to develop effective moderation tools are some potential solutions.

Beyond the responsibility of sports governing bodies, there is a collective duty to challenge and change the toxic culture prevalent online. Fans, media, and sponsors all have a role to play in discouraging and reporting abusive behavior. It is vital to create a supportive and inclusive environment for sportswomen, allowing them to showcase their talent without fear of harassment or discrimination.

Fifa and Fifpro’s study has shone a much-needed spotlight on the disturbing reality faced by sportswomen in the online realm. We must use this opportunity to rally together and demand change. Our sportswomen deserve respect, encouragement, and equal treatment in all aspects of their careers.

By standing united against online abuse, we can pave the way for a brighter future, where sportswomen can focus on their passion and achievements rather than being targets of hate. Let us raise our collective voice and ensure that the virtual playing field becomes a place of positivity, empowerment, and inclusivity.

By addressing this issue head-on, we can build a better sporting world for all, where talent and dedication triumph over prejudice and cruelty. It is time to stop the online abuse of sportswomen and create a space where they can truly shine.
