Australia has come back strong in the first Test against England with a great performance from Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey. Stuart Broad proved his worth by claiming David Warner’s wicket, but it was Khawaja who kept his cool amidst the chaos to hit his seventh century. Australia fought back from positions of 39 for two and 67 for three, ending the day at 311 for five. England had chances to take control of the game, but squandered them. Jonny Bairstow put down Alex Carey and Broad’s overstepping gave Khawaja a life. Ben Stokes turned to Harry Brook early on to try an unconventional tactic against Steve Smith. However, this didn’t work out, and Moeen Ali’s afternoon spell got the hosts the wicket of Travis Head. Australia then scored three consecutive 50-plus stands, with Khawaja leading the way to his 15th Test hundred and ending the day on a high note.
