Netflix’s casting of Denzel Washington as Hannibal sparks backlash in Tunisia

LONDON – Netflix’s decision to cast Black actor Denzel Washington as the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal in an upcoming film has caused controversy in Tunisia. Hannibal, known as one of history’s most renowned military leaders, was born near modern-day Tunis and led his troops and African war elephants across the Alps to strike Rome in 218 B.C.

While Hannibal’s exact skin color remains unknown, historians generally agree that he had Phoenician ancestry, originating from the region that encompasses modern Lebanon and Syria. Tunisian news outlet La Presse published an article in November claiming that Netflix’s casting choice was a historical error.

Critics on social media accused Netflix of promoting woke culture, and a petition calling for the cancellation of the film, described as a pseudo-documentary, has garnered thousands of signatures. The petition also urges the Tunisian Ministry of Culture to take action against what it perceives as an attempt to appropriate their history.

In response to the casting announcement, Tunisian MP Yassine Mami raised the issue in parliament, urging the Culture Minister Hayet Ketat Guermazi to address the matter. Mami stated that the focus should be on defending Tunisian identity and considering the reactions of civil society.

Minister Guermazi acknowledged the controversy but emphasized that her ministry was more focused on negotiating with Netflix to shoot some scenes in Tunisia. She highlighted that even though Hannibal is a historical figure that Tunisians are proud of, the film is fictional, and it is essential for Tunisia to be recognized as a platform for foreign productions once again.

The topic of racial identity has gained prominence in Tunisia, particularly with the influx of sub-Saharan migrants in recent years. In February, President Kais Saied came under fire for making unfounded claims that these migrants were part of a plot to change Tunisia’s predominantly Arab demographic to a purely African one.

Netflix’s casting choices have previously sparked similar controversies in the region. In Egypt, the decision to cast mixed-heritage actor Adele James as Cleopatra faced criticism. The Egyptian Antiquities Ministry later released a statement asserting that Cleopatra had white skin and Hellenistic characteristics.

Netflix and Denzel Washington have not yet commented on the backlash surrounding the casting of Hannibal. The controversy raises questions about historical accuracy and representation in the entertainment industry.

As debates on racial identity continue to shape societal discussions, it is crucial for filmmakers and producers to approach historical narratives with sensitivity and respect for cultural heritage. The controversy surrounding Netflix’s casting choices in Tunisia and Egypt highlights the widespread interest in accurate portrayals of historical figures and the importance of inclusive representation in the media.
