Hundreds of pilgrims in Bangladesh are unsure if they will be able to perform hajj after allegedly losing money to fraudulent travel agencies. One agency owner, Mohammad Shah Alam of SN Travels and Tours, allegedly embezzled over Tk 36 crore ($4.22 million) given to him by pilgrims before fleeing. It is claimed at least 538 people were affected by the scam. A further 71 claim that Ababil Tours and Travels kept their money but didn’t confirm plane tickets or visas. The local ministry of religious affairs has transferred two high officials and the ministry secretary due to alleged inconsistencies in hajj management.
