Young Mentees Foundation Hosts Quiz for JHS Students in Northern Region

The Young Mentees Foundation (YMF), a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting the overall academic development of students in the Northern Region, organized an exciting quiz competition to ignite students’ passion for education.

The quiz competition, held in Tamale, marked the culmination of a 10-week-long intellectual engagement among selected Junior High Schools (JHS) in the region. Starting with 56 JHSs from the Tamale Metropolis, Sagnarigu and Savelugu Municipalities, as well as the Tolon District, the competition brought together four outstanding JHSs: Tiyumba M/A JHS, Saint Peters R/C JHS, Nyohini Presbyterian Block ‘B’ JHS, and Dahinshelli JHS, for the grand finale.

The event received support from esteemed sponsors including Top Choco, Flora Tissue, and Afro Arab Group of Companies. Mr. Abdulai Salahudeen Tunteeya, the Chief Executive Officer of YMF, emphasized during the event that the competition is an annual initiative designed to boost students’ confidence in their learning abilities.

Highlighting the alarming high school dropout rates in the country, Mr. Tunteeya attributed this issue to factors such as low confidence, inadequate literacy rates, and lack of interest among students. These concerns led to the conception of the quiz competition, aiming to rekindle students’ enthusiasm for education.

The competition aimed to enhance students’ conceptual understanding, improve their performance in standardized tests, and motivate them to embrace a lifelong love for learning. The Northern Regional Director of Education, Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, highlighted the positive impact of such competitions on students’ intellectual and mental capabilities, driving them towards academic excellence.

Additionally, Hajia Alima Sagito-Saeed, the Executive Director of the Savannah Women Integrated Development Agency, encouraged the participants not to limit their pursuit of knowledge to the competition alone. She advised them to continue learning and broaden their horizons, enabling them to represent the region in national and international competitions.

In an exciting display of knowledge and intelligence, Dahinshelli JHS emerged as the winners of the competition, receiving a cash prize of GHc 2,000.00. Tiyumba M/A JHS secured the first runners-up position and was awarded a cash prize of GHc 1,000.00. Saint Peters R/C JHS claimed the second runners-up position, receiving GHc 500.00 in cash. Nyohini Presbyterian Block ‘B’ JHS earned the third runners-up spot and received GHc 300.00 as a cash prize.

The quiz competition organized by the Young Mentees Foundation showcased the importance of encouraging students’ interest in education and fostering their confidence in learning. Such initiatives play a crucial role in empowering the younger generation and equipping them with the necessary skills for future success.

The Young Mentees Foundation and its sponsors deserve commendation for their commitment to nurturing the academic potential of students in the Northern Region. By providing platforms for healthy intellectual competition, they are paving the way for a brighter and more promising future for the students and the region as a whole.
