New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) is reportedly in talks with the government over a bid to co-host the 2025 Rugby League World Cup with Pacific Island nations, excluding Australia. The International Rugby League (IRL) has been seeking a new location for the tournament since France withdrew as hosts due to financial issues. NZRL chief executive, Greg Peters, revealed a feasibility study has already begun and, if successful, the cup would aim to be a collaborative and cooperative partnership with Pacific Island nations and Papua New Guinea, delivering a unique World Cup. The ambition incorporates the women’s and wheelchair tournaments with an equal number of nations participating as in England’s 2017 contest. Peters would like the bigger games held in New Zealand to underpin commerciality and fan base, but he believes a minimum number of matches should be played around the Pacific Islands.
