Varanasi court gives one more week to ASI to submit Gyanvapi survey report; next hearing on Dec 18

The Varanasi district court has granted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) an additional week to submit a scientific survey report of the Gyanvapi mosque complex. The ASI had requested one more week to file the report, leading to the court fixing December 18 as the next date of hearing. This decision follows a previous order from the court, which had given the ASI 10 days to file the report by November 30.

The ASI had been conducting the survey for 100 days and had requested several extensions during this period. The survey had concluded almost a month ago, but the ASI sought extra time to compile the report. The court had previously granted the ASI an extension until November 17, which was later extended to November 28.

Although the survey covers the majority of the mosque premises, the Wuzukhana area has been sealed by the Supreme Court’s orders and is excluded from the survey. On November 2, the ASI informed the court that it had completed the survey but required more time to compile the report and provide details of the survey equipment used.

The survey was ordered by a Varanasi court on July 21, following a petition by four women seeking permission to pray at the Shringar Gauri Shrine located behind the western wall of the temple. In August of this year, the Allahabad High Court granted the ASI permission to conduct the survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi.

The ASI’s upcoming submission of the survey report on December 18 will play a crucial role in determining the future course of action regarding the Gyanvapi mosque complex. It is expected to provide significant insights into the historical and archaeological aspects of the site. The hearing scheduled for December 18 will be closely watched by all stakeholders involved in the matter.

The Varanasi court’s decision to grant additional time to the ASI reflects the importance of a thorough and comprehensive survey report. The scientific study aims to uncover valuable information about the Gyanvapi mosque complex, shedding light on its historical significance. As the ASI prepares to submit its findings, all eyes are now on the upcoming court hearing to gauge the potential impact on the future of the site.
