Tribal leader Vishnu Deo Sai has been chosen as the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The decision was announced by BJP leader and Union Minister Renuka Singh Saruta, who expressed her delight at the selection. Sai’s appointment marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first party worker from the tribal community and a farmer’s family to hold the position of Chief Minister.
Sai emerged victoriously in the recently concluded assembly polls from Kunkuri in north Chhattisgarh, an area where BJP clinched a sweeping victory. With significant experience in the BJP, Sai has previously served as the state chief and union minister, further highlighting his prominence within the party.
Coming from the influential Sahu (Teli) community, Sai carries influence in the Durg, Raipur, and Bilaspur divisions. He served as the State President of the BJP for Chhattisgarh from 2020 to 2022 and held the position of Union Minister of State for Mines and Steel in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sai enjoys immense support from tribal voters, solidifying his appeal among the constituents.
In a crucial development prior to the announcement, BJP central observers Sarbananda Sonowal and Arjun Munda held a meeting in Raipur. The polling for the Chhattisgarh elections took place in two phases, with the first phase held on November 7, featuring 223 candidates, and the second phase on November 17, with 958 candidates vying for electoral success.
Out of the 90 assembly constituencies in Chhattisgarh, the BJP secured victory in 54 seats, while the Congress won 35. The outcome of the elections translated into a favorable outcome for the BJP and its candidate, Vishnu Deo Sai, who will now assume the responsibilities of the Chief Minister.
