West Virginia coach Bob Huggins is facing the possibility of losing his job following his arrest and charge with driving under the influence in Pittsburgh. The incident occurred on Friday night when police found Huggins’ vehicle with a flat tire blocking traffic. They asked Huggins to move his car off the road, but he struggled to do so, and consequently failed a field sobriety test. West Virginia University has released a statement confirming that they are investigating the incident, and will take appropriate action when their investigation is complete.
This is not the first time Huggins has found himself in hot water. In May, Huggins had almost lost his job after he used a gay slur during a radio interview. The university retained him with conditions after he apologized. Given the DUI charge and his past history, it is uncertain whether the university will continue to support him.
Huggins’ career as a coach spans several decades, with 934 coaching wins under his belt. In 2022, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. However, his arrest is not the first time he has faced DUI charges. In 2004, he was charged with DUI, which contributed to his exit as Cincinnati head coach a year later.
Huggins has been coaching West Virginia since 2007, and the local community identifies him as a hometown hero. However, his latest incident may have gone beyond what the university is willing to tolerate. It remains to be seen whether Huggins will be able to retain his position as the head coach of the Mountaineers. The university’s investigations will provide clarity over the future of his job.
