Samajwadi Party Chief, Akhilesh Yadav, Voices Concern Over EVMs and Calls for the Use of Ballot Papers
Lucknow, Dec 9 – Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, has raised concerns over the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during elections, stating that they have created a prevailing sense of unease and mistrust among the public.
While refraining from explicitly mentioning the term EVMs, Yadav expressed his reservations about these machines and how their associated poll results have engendered a feeling of doubt in the minds of the people. He argued in favor of reverting to the use of traditional ballot papers, citing the example of the United States elections, where he claimed India is often inspired by American trends such as burgers, pizzas, and jeans.
In reference to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Yadav suggested that the party’s position of power grants them the ability to shape the narrative and manipulate opposing viewpoints. He highlighted the BJP’s inclination to alter the statements made by others to suit their agenda.
Yadav’s remarks indicate his concerns about the current election process and the implications it may have on democracy. He advocates for a return to ballot papers, which, in his opinion, would restore faith and trust in the electoral system.
The use of EVMs has been a subject of controversy and debate in Indian politics. While proponents argue that electronic voting ensures efficiency and accuracy in the counting process, critics highlight concerns about tampering and potential biases in the system.
Yadav’s call for the reinstatement of ballot papers resonates with those who question the reliability and transparency of EVMs. His comparison to the United States, a country Indian society often looks to for inspiration, adds weight to his argument.
It remains to be seen how Yadav’s proposition will be received amongst other political leaders and the public. In a democracy, the role of electoral systems is crucial and requires the confidence and trust of the people. Whether there will be a shift back to the traditional method of voting or further improvements to the current system, the debate around EVMs is likely to persist.
The Samajwadi Party leader’s stance reflects the concerns of many citizens and raises important questions about the future of India’s election process. As discussions continue, it is essential to address the issue of public trust and confidence in the democratic system to ensure the integrity and legitimacy of election outcomes.
