In an attempt to combat drug trafficking in the city, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has sealed 25 properties involved in the illegal activity for the first time in the national capital. Local authorities are also considering demolishing the properties to deter the drug mafia from using them in the future. This move aims to send a strict message against drug trafficking, according to a release from the government. The LG had directed concerned agencies to take strict measures against the drug menace on April 27, including sealing properties being used for drug peddling and demolishing such properties.
Twenty-five properties across Delhi were identified by Delhi Police as being used for peddling by either property owners or other occupants. Consequently, the properties were sealed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on the recommendation of the Delhi Police. The properties included 24 residential properties, which were used by drug peddlers without raising suspicion. Seven properties were sealed in Shahdara (North) zone followed by four properties each in the Central and Narela zones.
Apart from sealing and demolishing the properties, the LG has also directed the Transport Department to make provisions for cancelling the permit of the vehicles involved in drug trafficking. The Delhi Police and other concerned agencies have been directed to ruthlessly curb the drug menace by the LG while chairing the fifth meeting of the State Level Committee of NCORD (National Narcotics Coordination).
Drug trafficking is an international design to weaken the country, not a petty criminal act, according to the LG. The law-enforcing agencies were exhorted to work in mission mode to fight the menace. The LG asks Delhi Police to identify all existing and new hotspots of drug trafficking in the Capital, along with a detailed plan to eliminate them. The steps aim to make Delhi drug-free, with active participation from all stakeholder agencies of the state and central government.
