PONTIAC, Mich. – A Michigan teenager, Ethan Crumbley, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for the deadly attack at Oxford High School that claimed the lives of four students and caused terror among others. The sentencing came after emotional testimonies from parents and survivors, as Judge Kwame Rowe rejected pleas for a shorter sentence and ruled out any possibility of parole for Crumbley.

Crumbley, who was 15 at the time of the attack in 2021, expressed remorse and apologized before the sentence was announced. He admitted to his actions and acknowledged that he was a really bad person who had done terrible things. He pledged to change while behind bars.

The decision to impose a life sentence is uncommon for teenagers in Michigan due to legal considerations regarding minors committing violent acts. However, the Oakland County prosecutor argued that a no-parole term was fitting in Crumbley’s case.

The judge’s ruling followed deeply emotional statements from the families of the deceased and survivors, who shared the profound impact the tragedy had on their lives. Buck Myre, the father of Tate Myre, one of the victims, expressed the family’s profound anguish, stating, Our family has a permanent hole in it that can never be fixed – ever.

Nicole Beausoleil, the mother of Madisyn Baldwin, another victim, recalled the devastating moment when she saw her daughter’s lifeless body. Jill Soave, the mother of Justin Shilling, urged the shooter to recognize the missed opportunity for friendship and support. She highlighted her son’s kindness and the potential he had to help Crumbley navigate through the challenges of adolescence.

During the proceedings, Crumbley remained quiet, looking down as the victims’ families spoke. However, he will have an opportunity to address the judge and potentially present reasons why he believes he should be spared a life sentence.

Many other survivors and witnesses delivered impact statements, recounting their experiences and discussing the ongoing impact on their lives. Kylie Ossege shared how she desperately tried to save Hana St. Juliana’s life while they waited for medical help, but tragically, her classmate did not survive. Ossege, now a college student, continues to suffer from spinal injuries and daily pain resulting from the shooting.

The defense argued that Crumbley should have a chance for parole once he receives counseling and rehabilitation for his sick brain. However, Steve St. Juliana, the father of Hana, dismissed the possibility of rehabilitation, asserting that there was nothing the defendant could do to earn his forgiveness.

The tragic incident took place in Oxford Township, approximately 40 miles north of Detroit. In addition to the four students who lost their lives, six other students and a teacher were wounded.

The Oxford school district commissioned an independent investigation, which uncovered shortcomings at various levels within the school system that contributed to the tragedy. The report, released in October, emphasized the significance of identifying potential threats of violence, pointing to Crumbley’s behavior and the warning signs that went unnoticed.

The repercussions of the Oxford High School attack continue to be felt by the community, with individuals sharing how everyday activities have become triggers for fear and anxiety. The enduring impact on the victims’ lives, both physically and emotionally, was vividly described by the families and survivors.

Jennifer and James Crumbley, Ethan’s parents, are currently in jail, awaiting trial on involuntary manslaughter charges. They face accusations of providing access to a gun at home and neglecting their son’s mental health.
