PORT CANAVERAL – The Brevard Zoo announced on Wednesday that the future Port Canaveral outdoor aquarium is now 70% funded, with hopes of groundbreaking in just one year. The 14-acre site, which sits along the undeveloped Banana River, will be transformed into a state-of-the-art aquarium that promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for visitors.
The zoo has successfully raised $70 million towards the project, with half of the donations coming from private citizens. However, an additional $30 million is still needed to fully fund the aquarium. Executive director Keith Winsten expressed his gratitude for the community’s involvement in the fundraising efforts, highlighting the importance of the project for preserving the natural beauty of the Indian River Lagoon, the Atlantic Ocean, and the St. Johns.
Notable contributions include a $2 million donation from the renowned Ron Jon Surf Shop. Renderings of the aquarium reveal plans for a manatee healing center and a seagrass nursery. The zoo’s vision extends beyond just providing an engaging visitor experience; a portion of every ticket sale will also go towards improving the water quality of the lagoon.
If all goes according to schedule, groundbreaking is expected to commence next September, with the grand opening anticipated for 2027. The location, where A1A merges with the 528, offers convenient access for visitors.
