In a study published in the journal NPJ Digital Medicine, researchers propose a new system called GREAT PLEA for the responsible use of generative AI in the healthcare sector. The study highlights the increasing usage of AI in various industries and the need for ethical guidelines to ensure its responsible implementation. The researchers reviewed existing guidelines on the ethical use of AI in military and healthcare applications to develop the GREAT PLEA system.

Generative AI refers to a type of AI that produces new content by learning patterns from existing data. While it has proven beneficial in various applications such as drug discovery and equipment design, there is a lack of ethical considerations in its implementation. The researchers emphasize the need for curbs on the outcomes of AI algorithms and advocate for a more ethical approach.

The proposed GREAT PLEA system encompasses nine ethical principles: Governability, Reliability, Equity, Accountability, Traceability, Privacy, Lawfulness, Empathy, and Autonomy. These principles aim to address the potential biases, misinformation, and generalized evaluation metrics associated with generative AI. The system also promotes cooperation with lawmakers and collaboration with recognized healthcare governing bodies to enforce these principles.

The study highlights the importance of ethical considerations in both military and healthcare settings. While the military sector has made progress in implementing ethical AI principles, the healthcare sector lags behind. The GREAT PLEA system intends to bridge this gap and ensure responsible use of generative AI in clinical settings.

Experts believe that implementing the GREAT PLEA system will require the establishment of standards for developers and users and collaboration with organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Medical Association (AMA). By prioritizing ethical principles, the healthcare community can mitigate potential risks associated with AI and ensure its beneficial use in medical environments.

The researchers stress that further research and discussions are necessary to build trust in AI systems and enable the technology to take on previously human roles in healthcare. It is crucial to address ethical concerns and establish guidelines that prioritize patient privacy, empathy, and lawful practices.

As AI continues to advance and become more prevalent in society, it is essential to proactively address ethical considerations. The proposed GREAT PLEA system is a step towards responsible use of generative AI in healthcare, ensuring that the benefits of AI are harnessed while minimizing potential risks. By implementing these ethical principles, the healthcare community can pave the way for a future where AI assists healthcare professionals and improves patient outcomes without compromising on ethics.
