Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar has condemned the recent arrest of BJP Tamil Nadu state secretary SG Suryah, calling it an overreach of law and a violation of fundamental rights. Suryah was arrested on Friday for a tweet criticizing Madurai MP Su Venkatesan and a Communist Party of India (CPI) councilor Viswanathan for their alleged involvement in manual scavenging, which is prohibited by law. The BJP state secretary’s tweet was in support of a sanitation worker who died on the job as a result of working in faecal water. Chandrashekhar lashed out at the regime of MK Stalin, saying that the BJP strongly supports Suryah and will fight for his liberty. The Tamil Nadu state secretary appeared before the Madurai court on Saturday amidst heavy security.
