A 33-year-old man from Houston, Wilmer Rivera-Hernandez, has been sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for the heinous crimes of kidnapping, drugging, and raping a 15-year-old girl. The announcement was made by the United States Department of Justice on Monday.

Rivera-Hernandez pleaded guilty to interstate travel with the intent to engage in a sex act with a minor on August 24. During the hearing, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani shared additional details, including a statement from the victim describing her devastating transformation from a young, innocent girl to someone who now experiences feelings of anger, pain, guilt, numbness, depression, and humiliation.

Hamdani emphasized the gravity of Rivera-Hernandez’s actions, labeling them reprehensible and asserting that he should not be allowed to walk freely among civilized society.

In addition to his prison sentence, Rivera-Hernandez has been ordered to spend the rest of his life on supervised release. This will entail following numerous restrictions designed to prevent his access to children and the internet. Moreover, he will be required to register as a sex offender.

The impact of Rivera-Hernandez’s actions on the 15-year-old victim cannot be understated. Hamdani expressed his appreciation for the efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement in rescuing the child from the clutches of this monster. As a father to a 15-year-old girl himself, he expressed his gratitude for their coordinated efforts in Montgomery County, Texas, and Knox County, Tennessee.

The harrowing incident took place in June 2020 when Rivera-Hernandez took the young girl on what was intended to be a date. However, investigators revealed that the outing quickly turned into a nightmarish ordeal. When the victim realized that she was being aimlessly driven around instead of being taken home, she requested to be returned, only to be met with a refusal. Rivera-Hernandez then proceeded to forcefully grab her by the head, strangling her and threatening both her safety and that of her family. He seized her phone and compelled her to consume alcohol and medication that made her drowsy and unable to resist. Subsequently, he transported her from Houston to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he subjected her to rape in a motel. The following day, he continued to drive her through Arkansas and into Tennessee.

In a disturbing twist, Rivera-Hernandez attempted to obstruct justice by arranging the creation and delivery of fabricated WhatsApp messages posing as the victim. These messages portrayed the minor as recanting her claims of kidnapping and rape, indicating that she had been in love with him all along. However, a comprehensive investigation quickly revealed the messages to be fraudulent, underscoring Rivera-Hernandez’s desperate attempt to avoid conviction.

Rivera-Hernandez will remain in custody until he is transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility at a later date.

This shocking and painful case highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts in protecting the most vulnerable members of society from individuals who commit abhorrent crimes. The impact on the victim serves as a haunting reminder of the lasting damage caused by such deeply distressing experiences. The significant sentence imposed on Rivera-Hernandez signals a strong message that crimes of this nature will not be taken lightly, and justice will be served.
