A woman involved in a fatal police shooting inside a semitrailer in Indianapolis claims she was held hostage for hours before the intervention, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). The incident occurred on Thursday when officers responded to a call for help regarding a hostage situation at a McDonald’s in the southwest area of the I-69 and I-465 interchange. The 911 caller directed police to the semitrailer and upon arrival, officers attempted to speak with the truck driver, identified as Lamont Bland. However, Bland retreated to the sleeping compartment of the truck after briefly sitting in the front seat. It was at this point that the woman’s screams were heard from the back of the truck. Police established a perimeter and made announcements, ultimately breaking the driver’s side window to gain better visibility into the truck. When officers attempted to communicate with Bland, he threatened to kill the woman with a knife. The officer entered the truck and discovered Bland on top of the woman, prompting him to fire his weapon, resulting in Bland’s death. Investigations revealed that the woman had allegedly been pulled into the cabin of the semitrailer, where she was held against her will for hours. She also stated that Bland accused her of theft despite never having met him before. The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was treated at the scene before being transported to the downtown IMPD homicide office for questioning. No officers were injured during the incident. As authorities proceed with their investigations into the incident and police procedures, the lieutenant involved will be placed on administrative leave while other officers may receive time off to process the events. This marks the seventeenth police shooting in Indianapolis for the year 2023, the highest number since twenty such incidents were recorded in 2015. Police usually disclose the names of officers involved in shootings approximately one week later, with bodycam footage typically released a few weeks after the incident takes place.
