Delhi recorded the highest number of road crash fatalities in the country in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). A new report titled Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2022 reveals that the national capital witnessed 2,103 people losing their lives in road accidents. In addition, Delhi also accounted for the highest number of road accidents in the country, with 5,387 reported cases and 1,412 deaths resulting from fatal road accidents.
The report highlights that over-speeding was the leading cause of road accident deaths in 53 megacities, including Delhi, accounting for 51.5% of fatalities. Dangerous or careless driving/over-taking followed closely at 31.3%, while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol contributed to 2.7% of the fatalities.
The alarming statistics shed light on the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in Delhi. Drastic steps must be taken to address the issue of over-speeding, which continues to claim lives at an alarming rate. Authorities should also focus on curbing dangerous driving practices such as careless overtaking, as well as cracking down on individuals driving under the influence.
Experts believe that stricter enforcement of traffic rules combined with public awareness campaigns can create a positive impact and reduce the number of road accidents in the city. Additionally, investments in infrastructure improvements, such as better road design and maintenance, can contribute to making Delhi’s roads safer and more accommodating.
Addressing this issue requires a collaborative effort from the government, law enforcement agencies, and the general public. As responsible citizens, we must prioritize safe driving practices and promote a culture of road safety. Together, we can strive towards creating a city where all commuters can travel without the constant fear of road accidents.
It is crucial for Delhi to learn from these grim statistics and take immediate action to prevent further loss of life on the roads. The well-being and safety of citizens should be the top priority of authorities and individuals alike. By implementing effective strategies and fostering a sense of responsibility among the residents, we can strive towards making Delhi a city with safer roads and fewer road fatalities.
