Elk Grove Village Implements Contagious Disease Documentation Requirement for Hotels

COOK COUNTY – Elk Grove Village becomes the third Chicago suburb to implement new rules aimed at restricting migrant stays. The village has introduced an ordinance that prohibits hotel and motel owners from providing accommodation to individuals without medical documentation confirming their freedom from contagious diseases within the last 60 days. However, the rule does not apply to migrants who have been residing in the U.S. for at least a year. In addition, the ordinance restricts warehouse owners from converting buildings into temporary housing.

This move comes after Schaumburg and Rosemont recently took action to protect their convention business by enacting a tax on long-term hotel stays. Schaumburg’s village board unanimously approved the ordinance, imposing a tax on hotel stays lasting 30 days or more. The aim is to discourage migrants from being housed in Schaumburg hotels.

The urgent meeting was called after receiving information about a potential migrant move to the area. Opinions among residents regarding migrants are divided. Nicole Murray expressed support for the proactive decision made by Schaumburg, stating, I think Schaumburg is doing a good thing by being proactive with this decision.

The village board shared concerns about the lack of a comprehensive plan for services that migrants may require, which prompted the decision. It was reported that an unspecified entity was considering several suburban hotels, including three in Schaumburg, to house migrants. In response, the board adopted a strategy similar to the one already in place in Rosemont.

Rosemont has established a tax on long-term stays if a migrant housing plan is implemented. The ordinance imposes a $1,000 per month tax for stays lasting 30 days or more.

The new rules in Elk Grove Village, Schaumburg, and Rosemont signify a growing trend in addressing concerns related to migrant stays. While some residents support these measures as a proactive approach, others have voiced their disagreement. The ordinances aim to mitigate the impact of unplanned migrant housing on local communities and services.

As these Chicago suburbs take action, the broader challenge of addressing the needs of migrants and implementing comprehensive plans for their accommodation and healthcare remains. The impact of these rules on migrant communities and the overall effectiveness of such measures will continue to be a topic of discussion.

The issue of migrant stays and the measures taken by these suburbs highlight the complexities associated with immigration and the need for comprehensive and sustainable solutions that respect the rights and dignity of all individuals involved.

It is important for policymakers, community members, and stakeholders to engage in informed and inclusive dialogues to find solutions that balance the interests and needs of both migrants and local communities. In the meantime, these recent initiatives serve as a reminder of the ongoing debates surrounding immigration and the challenges faced by cities in managing the various aspects of migration.
